Experimental errors were not taking the force of friction into account. Friction needs to be accounted for, or else the results could be totally worthless. This lab taught me how much of a difference friction can make. The problem was that our theoretical accelerations did not take the force of friction into account. When we finally figured it out though, I learned a lot about lab procedure and the importance of multiple trials. Overall, the correct procedure for this lab was unknown and confusing. We only did trials of varying masses but we needed to vary the masses and take multiple trials with all the masses. We did not initially perform this lab correctly. We expected the theoretical and actual accelerations to be the same, but they were not of course. The car was constant and when calculating the accelerations everything was constant. We manipulated all of these but settled on one specific distance and mass to calculate the actual and theoretical accelerations. The variables in this lab were the masses attached to the string and the distance that the car traveled. Then we calculated the theoretical acceleration of the car to be 4.146 m/s^2. Using the time from the timers, we calculated the actual acceleration of the car to be 2.853 m/s^2 with an attached mass of 250 grams.
We dropped the masses over the edge of the ramp and the acceleration of the masses downward pulled the car forward.The force of gravity pulled the masses downward and that force was also applied in the tension of the string.
We setup our lab by placing a car on a ramp (that was as close to level as possible) and attaching masses to the car via a string. The purpose of this lab was to see the relationship between friction and force (caused by the force of gravity and tension).The overall task was to calculate theoretical and actual accelerations of a car and determine if they were the same.
